A situation analysis of children, adolescents and women in Aruba was undertaken in 2011–2012. Commissioned by the United Nations Children’s Fund-The Americas and Caribbean Regional Office, it was conducted by the Observatorio Social del Ecuador (OSE), a non-governmental organization based in Quito. The study had two main objectives: to evaluate progress and challenges around the implementation of the rights of children and women; and to make recommendations for social action and public policies in the medium and long term in order to improve the conditions and life opportunities of those population groups.

The White Yellow Cross Teen Mothers Department provides curative care to teenage mothers in Aruba. The teenage mother problem is huge and is a social problem. Teenage mothers often leave school early, have a less favorable financial status and less advantageous future prospects than peers without children (Diez & Mistry, 2010).
The White Yellow Cross is committed to them, but encounters various problems when providing curative care. This is unfavorable for both the care provider and the client.
The aim of this study is therefore to identify ways in which the effectiveness of curative care can be increased.
The research question of this study is as follows: 'How can the White Yellow Cross Aruba Department of Teenage Mothers increase the effectiveness of curative care for teenage mothers?'.

As acknowledged by the World Health Organization (WHO) adolescents (between 10 and 19 years) are often thought of as a healthy group. However, many adolescents do die prematurely due to accidents, suicide, violence, pregnancy related complications and other illnesses that are either preventable or treatable. Numerous more suffer of chronic ill-health and disability. Additionally, many serious diseases in adulthood have their roots in adolescence. Moreover, tobacco use, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, poor eating and limited exercise habits, lead to illness or premature death later in life (WHO, 2013).
In Aruba, the prevalence of risk factors among adolescents influencing their health is unknown; this due to the fact that indicators about the adolescent’s personal, perceived and social environment are scattered over the different stakeholders who work closely with them. With this survey a description of the prevalence of the different risk and protective factors together with the adolescent’s own perception of their environment shall be presented.
